Building Influence, Connection and Leadership: Highlights from GAIA EMEA London 2026

This June, GAIA members from across the EMEA region gathered in London for two days of learning, collaboration and professional development. While the topics ranged from personal branding to persuasive communication, a common thread ran throughout the conference: the importance of being intentional about how we show up, communicate our value and build meaningful relationships.

Day One: Building a Personal Brand for Impact and Influence

The conference opened with an engaging workshop on personal branding, led by the Chartered Institute of Marketing, exploring how advisers and leaders can develop a reputation that creates trust, influence and opportunity.

Participants examined a simple but powerful idea: your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room. The session challenged attendees to think deliberately about how they are perceived by clients, colleagues and professional networks, and how those perceptions influence relationships and career progression.

A key theme was that trust sits at the heart of every successful professional relationship. The workshop explored how credibility, reliability and genuine connection combine to create influence, and how a strong personal brand helps others see the best version of who we are.

Through a series of practical exercises, delegates identified their strengths, motivations and personal “superpowers”. Participants explored brand archetypes such as the Caregiver, Sage, Hero and Explorer, helping them articulate the qualities that make them distinctive and valuable.

An especially popular exercise involved developing personal brand statements — concise descriptions of who we are at our best and what we bring to others. Delegates reflected on how they could align their online presence, communications and everyday interactions with the reputation they aspire to build.

The afternoon shifted from brand creation to brand management, focusing on how personal brands are expressed through social media, email communications, client meetings and internal relationships. Participants discussed the importance of consistency, recognising that in today’s connected world, a personal brand exists both online and offline.

The day concluded with an exploration of “skilful authenticity” — the idea that effective leaders remain true to themselves while adapting their style to different situations and audiences. Rather than viewing adaptation as inauthenticity, delegates were encouraged to see it as a leadership skill that enables stronger relationships and better outcomes.

Day Two: The Power of Influence

Day two took delegates deeper into the art and science of persuasive communication, led by industry experts from Dimensional. The focus was not on selling in the traditional sense, but on becoming more effective communicators, storytellers and trusted advisers.

The session explored four core communication disciplines: storytelling, competitive talking points, developing a “pointy point of view”, and closing conversations effectively. A recurring message throughout the day was that influence is not about talking more — it is about communicating with greater clarity and purpose.

One of the most engaging segments centred on storytelling. Delegates learned a five-stage storytelling framework designed to create emotional engagement and help audiences better understand the “why” behind ideas and decisions. Participants practised crafting personal stories, client stories and firm stories, discovering how powerful narratives can communicate complex ideas in memorable ways.

The workshop also explored how advisers can discuss competitors constructively and professionally. Rather than criticising alternatives, participants learned techniques for acknowledging competitors’ strengths while clearly articulating what differentiates their own approach. The emphasis was on creating productive conversations rather than winning arguments.

Another highlight was the introduction of the “pointy point of view” — short, evidence-based statements designed to spark discussion and help qualify conversations. Delegates worked in teams to develop and test their own perspectives, learning how thoughtful provocation can generate engagement and uncover meaningful client insights.

The final sessions focused on the concept of “always be closing”, reframing closing not as a sales tactic but as a continuous process of listening, checking understanding and confirming commitment throughout a conversation. Participants explored how active listening, thoughtful questioning and clear next steps contribute to stronger client relationships and better outcomes.

Throughout the day, the importance of deliberate practice was reinforced. Just as elite athletes continually refine their skills, advisers were encouraged to practise communication techniques intentionally, recognising that small improvements, consistently applied, can have a significant long-term impact.

Bringing It All Together

Although the two days covered different topics, they delivered a shared message: influence begins with authenticity.

Whether building a personal brand, telling a compelling story, communicating a point of view or guiding a client through an important decision, success comes from understanding who we are, what we stand for and how we create value for others.

The London conference provided attendees with practical tools, fresh perspectives and valuable opportunities to learn from peers across the GAIA community. More importantly, it reinforced one of the core strengths of our network: the willingness of independent advisers to continually develop, challenge themselves and share ideas that ultimately benefit the clients and communities they serve.

We look forward to continuing these conversations at future GAIA events around the world.
